Species Spotlight: Sorran

Composition

Sorran are the only known organised cyborg race in the galaxy. They have incredibly unique composition that blends organic systems with robotic hardware.

Not much is known about specific makeup of a Sorran, but it is believed they are composed of organic vital organs such as a heart and brain, supplemented by a cybernetic nervous system that sustains itself on kinetic energy naturally accrued over a Sorran’s lifetime. All of this is protected by a hard outer shell that gives no face and tells no emotion.

Sorran also appear to have a proficiency in the old art of necromancy, able to raise organic corpses as zombies. Where this ability comes from is unknown, but it is thought to be a remnant of their original organic species, thought to be the creators of the NEX-Droids.

Sorran cannot reproduce, so it is thought that ‘new’ Sorran must be created, but only the NEX-Droids know how. Even so, one of the main missions of the independent Sorran Sovereign Stars is to regularly attack the NEX-Droids to liberate their people and bolster their numbers.

Despite their robotic augments, Sorran have a lifespan of 140 years, at which point their heart and/or brain seem to expire. If Sorran have an age of maturity, it is not known.

Creation

In GY 5943, the NEX-Droids are thought to have been granted full sentience by their masters, who had dwindled greatly in population. Almost immediately, Executor Unit-01 analysed their master’s organic composition as inefficient and an existential threat to their own survival, and so began assimilating their race, turning them into cyborgs.

If the Sorran were the first creators of the NEX-Droids, like most theorise, it would then stand to reason the creation of the first Sorran, as we know them, began around this time.

If so, the continued existence of the Sorran, despite their perishing age, would imply that somewhere on Alpha Array is effectively a ‘breeding centre’ of their original race, occasionally harvested to create more cyborgs.

Rebellion

In GY 7082, a collection of Sorran managed to escape their shackles and fled, founding the Sorran Sovreign Stars.

While the galactic community initially celebrated, it soon became clear that the Sorran were obsessed with military efficiency and had taken a ‘whatever it takes’ approach to policy. They enslaved much of their own populace and, most worryingly, tapped into dark arcane arts to create enormous undead armies en-masse.

Organisation

The Sovereign Sorran Stars are not quite officially a full-fledged stellar empire, but they are effectively one. They organise themselves as a meritocratic military dictatorship, in which the most seasoned military staff rule. The Sorran have been locked in a fierce war with the NEX-Droids, and a mostly inactive war with the Galactic High Republic, since their conception, so the galaxy has only ever seen a wartime government from them. It is not known how they may organise themselves in times of peace, though their lack of ability to replicate themselves means they may never not be in a desperate situation.

Population Centres

Azure Chalice (System: Great Sleeper) – A quite horrific world covered in gamma radiation, only the Sorran’s cybernetic nature allows them to survive upon the world. This was however one of the reasons it made for a great home world for the first independent Sorran to escape to.

Carnavoss (System: Avim) – A ‘perfect’ world, ideal for sustaining any life, Carnavoss should be a place of beauty and a beacon of hope for the galaxy. Instead, the world is being extracted for its resources, and the natural organic life present there is being turned into undead armies for the Sorran’s use. One interesting element of the world is supposed to be its ‘ecological nervous system’ – a phenomenon in which the plant life of the world is connected to one another via roots.

Cattalstane (System: Ranction) – A tomb world thought to once house life thanks to the presence of dead and decaying structures made by sentient hands. The world is primarily used as a secure rehabilitation centre for newly rescued Sorran.
