Species Spotlight: Othari

Physiology

The Othari are a interesting species that posses a chitinous skin that offers them protection from physical damage,

As well as that, while their insect like mouth might be expected to create sickly sounds, instead, the Othari posses angelic voices punctuated by unique clicks, that then blend with their enchanting speech patterns to make them some of the greatest orators in the galaxy. This is thought to be thanks to a complex vocal system that resonates sound, separates into different pitches, then merges it once more.

Othari otherwise have quite similar systems to most humanoids, save for a single notable difference. Othari have a second liver. This is thought to be due to the presence of more drug-like toxins in much native Othari food and drink, which requires extra processing to be safely circulated through the rest of the body.

Othari have average life spans of 82 stellar years and reach adulthood at the age of 18.

Early Sapient Life

The Othari originated upon the volcanic planet of Alaria. Their society developed similarly to many others, with their people forming tribal societies that would occasionally war and raid one another.

As opposed to developing farming communities, the first stage of centralisation for the early Othari came in the form of nutrient extractors, early machines that would draw both drinking water and filtered nutrients from the otherwise rocky ground.

Significant Historical Events

Migration to Alaria Station, GY 5987-6018 - The most significant event in early Othari history was the migration onto a vast foundry ring that was constructed around the planet. After millennia of increasingly violent tectonic activity, Alaria was becoming inhospitable. Generations of scientists and engineers created a large ring around the planet that could both house life, and harvest the bountiful metals and other resources of the planet below, as well as use its geo-thermal activity for power. It is rumoured that the Othari received help in designing and building the ring, and in accelerating their spaceborne capabilities, by past stellar empires, though Othari history books mention no such thing.

Founding of Othari Industries, GY 6054 – Not long after the end of the Othari migration, Othari Industries was founded as soon became the leading power upon Alaria Station. Though it would be centuries until the Othari developed functional hyperdrives, Othari Industries sent many sub-light probes and even manned sub-light mission out to try explore their neighbouring systems.

First Hyperlane Jump, GY 6324 – Over three centuries after their migration to Alaria Station, the Othari finally developed a functional hyperdrive. The first hyperlane jump was conducted in GY 6324, and would soon open the floodgates for Othari Industries to establish themselves as a galaxy-spanning megacorp, dedicated to engineering, primarily of military means.

Founding of the Othari PMC, GY 6758 – As the Ravenous Wars began in earnest and the Nafkan rushed towards Othari space, the Othari founded their infamous private military companies. These highly funded, highly effective mercenaries would be vital in the wars, then soon carve out a niche in the galaxy as the premium fighting force in the galaxy.

Organisation

Othari Industries are a megacorp, similar to the IPC. However, as the only major population centre in Othari space is Alaria Station, Othari Industries can afford to be far more centralised. This means Othari Industries can better control funding of different research and development and invest more directly into their ‘homeworld’.

Where this differs is in their franchises, outposts set up throughout the galaxy and run autonomously, leasing the Othari Industries name and technology. These franchises operate effectively independently, but give Othari Industries vast amounts of credits in fees.

Shared Values/Beliefs

The Othari are generally quite a proud people, who like to think of themselves as elder states of the galaxy thanks to their relatively early stellar lifetime. This is often thrown back in their face however as they took so long in creating their first hyperdrives.

Othari are also generally very charismatic and extroverted, which makes their trader lifestyle all the more effective. They enjoy spending time around their own people, and around any other species.

Othari do have many fears over the galactic threats of the galaxy, such as what the Nafkan once were and the NEX-Droids. They tend to like the republic, though enjoy being distanced from its control.

Significant Figures

Chief Executive Tyll Poxon – The current presiding chief executive of Othari Industries, Tyll Poxon has a reputation as a ruthless negotiator. He has overseen a steady increase to the quality of life on Alaria Station, however, so is quite well-liked amongst the populous.

Controlled Planets/Population Centres

Alaria Station (System: Alar) – A vast foundry ring that encircled the volcanic planet of Alaria. The station extracts resources and geo-thermal power from the planet while also having enough space to house billions of people upon the ring. Alaria Station is thought to be the largest and most populous space station in the galaxy.
